Land Conservancy Of British Columbia in Kimberley, BC
The mission is in the name for this not-for-profit association. The Land Conservancy of British Columbia has set its mission as protecting and restoring habitat for plants and animals. But that basic goal is just the foundation for an extensive list of purposes set down in a constitution and bylaws.
The vision of this group (commonly known as TLC) includes protection and promotion of outdoor areas that may have scientific, historical or cultural value as well. Education is one of the key tasks set for this association too, all without personal gain for board members and volunteers.
With an eye on the successful National Trust of Britain, enterprising folks in British Columbia founded the TLC in 1997. From that rather recent beginning the group has grown through financial and personal labour support from dozens of volunteers.
The key benefit for the public is the existence of "heritage sites" open to the public for viewing. These sites focus on the natural beauty of the land, its geology, its plants and animals. According to the group and to public records, TLC has protected and preserved more than 100 properties in the province of British Columbia. This effort involves more than 86,000 acres preserved and protected in cooperation with government agencies and other groups.
Visitors may want to experience TLC projects at Sooke Potholes Regional Park, southern Vancouver Island's Sea to Sea Greenbelt, or Wycliffe Wildlife Corridor near Kimberley. The group has taken the Harlequin Duck as its symbol because this endangered duck lives in a few areas of British Columbia. Known for its perseverance, the Harlequin Duck "is an inspiration for us to persevere in overcoming our obstacles," according to TLC.
