The Stafford Technical Center provides technical education to high school children and adults. It is located in Rutland and opened in 1974. The Center has nineteen day programs, and students can earn college credits when they are enrolled at the center. The day programs and evening classes are open to adults in Rutland county. The Technical Center partners with the Vermont Technical College to provide classes for continuing education. The programs cover a range of occupations including culinary arts, forestry and horticulture, and hospitality and tourism management. Apprenticeships are available for students who have already completed a year at the Center.
The Technical Center is involved in a number of programs including Skills USA. This national organization prepares students for technical, service and skilled occupations. Students from the Center have been involved in this program for over 30 years, and through their experience have developed skills in teamwork, leadership and personal development. Students have performed well in state and national level competitions, and have been awarded gold medals.
The evening class program includes classes in slate carving, computer design packages, using a digital camera, image editing, and welding for artists. The Center runs a summer camp for students entering the 8th or 9th grade. Students will have the opportunity to get involved in many different activities including digital arts, jewelry-making and automotive technology. Students also has the opportunity to join the SPIDERS rock climbing team and compete in monthly competitions or attend the spring FCCLA convention and develop skills in leadership, teamwork and goal-setting.
