Hawaii is full of natural wonders and Sprouting Horn in Kauai is one such wonder that draws in the crowds. Some of the sites you will find in Hawaii are simple natural treasures. Sprouting Horn is a natural occurrence that has not been touched by man in any way. It is a lava tube that has water forced through it that creates a sending water blowing 50 feet in the air. With every blow the water is accompanied by a hissing sound. There is a lot of folklore and legend surrounding Sprouting Horn. It is said a lizard goddess, Kaikapu, is trapped in there and the sound is her angry cry. Another story says a large mo'o living in the water got trapped in there while trying to catch a fisherman in his clutched and the cries are him still trapped.
The truth is that the lava tube sprouts water and makes the noise due to waters rushing under the lava shelf that burst through the hole to the surface. The best times to see the wonder is said to be at sunset when the sun shines Justin the right direction to produce a rainbow of colors. Another hole used to be located in this area, but it was much larger and the salt water used to cause damage to local sugar cane fields, so it was destroyed. Sprouting Horn can be seen from an overlook. It is forbidden to actually go out on the lava shelf as this has caused injuries and death in the past. The overlook provides an unobstructed view of Sprouting Horn and is easy to get to right off Lawa'I Road.
