Spouting Horn Volcanic Cone in Kauai, is a natural phenomenon geyser second only to Yellowstone's Old Faithful. The blowholes performs when big waves hit Kauai's south short with force and send a spout of salt water up into the air. In winter time the water has been known to shoot up to six stories high, but regularly shoots around 15 meters.
The Spouting Horn is a natural rock formation on a lava shelf that funnels water through a lava tube and results in a geyser effect and a loud noise as the water is forced through the hole.
What makes this blowhole different to others in Hawaii is the presence of a second hole that blow air out and sounds like moaning. According to Hawaiian legend, the coastline at Kauai was once guarded by a giant female lizard called Mo'o. Mo'o munched on any intruders and kept the area safe. One day along came Liko who wanted to catch some fish. Mo'o came out to gobble up Liko, but Liko quickly threw a spear through the lizard's mouth. Mo'o chased Liko into a lava tube from where Liko escaped, but the lizard did not. The moaning in the Spouting Horn is said to be the moaning of the giant lizard Mo'o and her cry for help.
The Spouting Horn Volcanic Cone is accessed from Lawai Road on the south side of Kauai to the west of Prince Kuhio Park. The Spouting Horn is a popular tourist attraction among visitors. The Hawaiian word for the blowhole is Puhi.
