The Na Pali Coast State Park in Kauai, Hawaii is located in the center of the northwest side of Kauai. The Park is 6,175 acres in total land mass size. Na Pali is Hawaiian for the cliffs. The area was named for the thousand foot spikes that soar over the area. This beautiful wilderness on the north shore of the island are made of rugged cliffs and narrow valleys that end at the sea. There are waterfalls and swift flowing streams that cut and wind their way through the valleys and into the sea. The Na Pali Coast State Park in Kauai is featured extensively in many travel magazines and advertisements for Hawaii and in commercials and Hollywood films. The Park itself was formed as a means to protect the Kalalau Valley. The Na Pali Coast State park is not accessible by vehicle but visitors can hike in the park, boat up to it in kayaks or view it from a helicopter. The Kalalau Trail provides land access and extends eleven miles across five major valleys and ends at Kalalau Beach at the base of Kalalau Valley. There is also a camping area at the end of the trail on the beaches of Hanakapiai and Kalalau. The Kalalau Valley in the Na Pali Coast State Park is known to be one of the premiere backpacking destinations in all of the world. There are currently not any full time workers in the Na Pali Coast State Park, and a recent resource management project has been carried on to maintain and protect the area.
