Mt. Na Molokama in Kauai sits majestically looking over Hanalei Bay. The mountain is an important part of the Hawaiian psyche popping up in the lyrics to several nostalgic Hawaiian songs and paintings by local Hawaiian artists.
Kauai is geographically Hawaii's oldest and westernmost island. It is known for its unsurpassed natural beauty and Mt. Na Molokama looks out over the island like a silent guardian of paradise. Kauai is one of the wettest places on earth and the rains have carved out gorges into the sides of the mountains.
The name of the mountain means "interweaving bound fast". After heavy rains the mountain is awash with up to 23 waterfalls that gush down the mountain face and form rainbows that bounce along the cliffs.
Hanalei Bay has stunning views of Mt Na Molokama and several of the area's resorts make much of their rooms having views of the lush green mountain. There are certainly much worse views to wake up with than Mt Na Molokama with its cascading waterfalls and mist-capped, verdant expanse. Helicopter tours of the island of Kauai are available that take in the Na Molokama mountain and the Kilauea Volcano.
Hanalei town nestles the side of the Na Molokama Mountain and is a charming place for visitors to relax and take in the sites of Kauai. The bay consists of two miles of sandy beach which offer excellent moorage for boats. Many boats use the bay as a departure point for day excursions around the island.
