The majestic mountain perches itself behind the Kauai village of Hanalei. The mountains nestled behind Hanalei are famous for their waterfalls, which cascade down the mountain range after each tropical shower.
Although Kauai is the fourth biggest of eight Hawaiian Islands, it is largely undeveloped. Only three per cent of the island has been developed, mostly around the beach areas, which leaves a lot of lush tropical forest and landscape to be explored by visitors. There are a number of adventurous activities that visitors to the historic island of Kauai can try: climbing to the top of Mamalahoa is just one of them. Mamalahoa, which rises 788 meters above sea level has a number of hiking trails and climbing paths that visitors can use to climb to the top of the mountain and look down over Hanalei Bay.
One of the finest treks on Kauai is the Mamalahoa Trail, which is also known as the King's Trail. This trek leads visitors to some of the best preserved petroglyphs on the island. There are around 30,000 carvings of people and animals made in ancient panoehoe lava flows by indigenous Hawaiians. The trail was originally made in the 19th century fro horse travel. Today access is from a shopping center parking lot. The best time to walk the trail is in the morning to avoid the burning sun. The trail is in the Kohala area of the island.
I looking to climb Mamalahoa Mountain or walk the trail it is best to go with an agency or group who are familiar with the hiking conditions on the island.
