Hanalei Town in Kauai, Hawaii was the backdrop of the movie South Pacific, a musicla from 1958. Hanalei is located on the northern most tip of Kauai. There is a town named Hanalei as well as a beach, a river, a valley and a lookout with the same name. There a many beautiful mountain around the city of Hanalei and it is also home to the Hanalei National Wildlife Refuge. Almost all of the taro grown in Hawaii is grown in Hanalei. Hawaiians use taro to make poi and a lot of other foods that are the mainstay of traditional Hawaiian cuisine. Taro is grown in flooded fields that make the country side look like a patchwork quilt. Hanalei also has some beautiful waterfall that flow down the tall mountains that surround the city. The water that flows from the waterfalls provides the area with the bountiful water that is needed to grow the taro crops. Hanalei also is home to the Hanalei Beach, a pristine white sand beach that is popular with tourists and locals alike. The gorgeous beach surrounds the whole bay area. The beach is a great place for surfing and has made the beach rather famous. There is also a pier on the east end of the beach near where the Hanalei River enters the ocean. The Hanalei Beach offers visitors a long sandy beach, lifeguards, restrooms, showers, a grass and shady area, picnic facilities, pavilions, good swimming, and great surfing and body boarding. Hanalei is a small town but there are several shops and restaurants in the city.
