Landing Mall in Kansas City, Mo
Shopping has not always been what it is today. At one time, families and people only had a few stores to shop. Many of these stores sold a little bit of everything we needed. Then the idea of individual stores came, giving shoppers a bigger selection of each item, but causing the inconvenience of having to travel from store to store. Suddenly, the idea of malls came, which allowed shoppers one-stop shopping. Shopping Malls and shopping centers have been around for many years. Landing Mall in Kansas City, Mo is one shopping mall that has been fighting to stay alive in recent years, fighting competition with newer and larger malls.
The Landing Mall, which was opened in the 1960s, was the first indoor mall in Kansas City. It's located at Troost Avenue and 63rd Street. A lot of architectural design went into the building of this mall. It had the theme of Noah's Ark as well as the perfect mix of stores and shops to satisfy the customers and keep them coming back. This was a great shopping mall for families.
In recent years, the Landing Mall has deteriorated and is in trouble, including the recent flooding this past year. The Noah's Ark animal statues are no longer in front of the mall attracting the kids and many of the stores that were there are now vacant. Many of the townspeople feel the front of the store is an eyesore to the city. There has been controversy between the owners, who aren't renovating or selling the mall and councilmen and redevelopers that want to either see it sold and rebuilt into an outlet mall or renovated. For the sake of history, the owners would love to see it restored to its original beauty.
