Mix equal parts of the latest technology and a distinguished history of nearly 100 years, and you have one of the leading hospitals in the state of Florida. St. Vincent's Medical Center in Jacksonville was founded as a healthcare site by the Daughters of Charity in 1916 and their mission continues today.
Recently named one of the top 50 heart hospitals in the United States, St. Vincent's HealthCare is a not-for-profit organization with a longstanding reputation for excellent patient care. One key change that will enhance the health system's mission will be the 2008 addition of St. Luke's Hospital to the St. Vincent's HealthCare team. This hospital on Jacksonville's south side is widely anticipated.
St. Vincent's is supported by gifts, made through the St. Vincent's Foundation. This financial assistance allows the healthcare system to provide medical care for those who cannot pay or cannot travel to the centre. A number of people volunteer their time to the hospital, its patients and to the families. Fundraising is also a major task for volunteers, as are the outreach ministries.
SVHC is now part of Ascension Health, created eight years ago when the Daughters of Charity joined in healthcare ministry with Sisters of St. Joseph. Key health services and programs at SVHC include the Gary and Nancy Chartrand Heart & Vascular Center, where 20,000 cardiovascular procedures are performed each year; the Mary Virginia Terry Cancer Center, continuing a cancer care program that started decades ago; and the Spine & Brain Institute.
