Jacksonville Museum-Modern Art in Jacksonville, FL
The Jacksonville Museum Modern (Contemporary) Art in Jacksonville, Florida is the first organization in the community devoted to visual arts. It was established in 1924 as the Jacksonville Fine Arts Society, and became incorporated as the Jackson Museum of Contemporary Art in 1948. In 1978 it became the first institution in Jacksonville to be accredited by the American Association of Museums.
In 1999 the museum moved downtown beside the newly renovated City Hall in the historic Western Union Telegraph Building on Hemming Plaza, a 60,000 square foot building. The building was completely refurbished to make room for the museum's galleries. It was also restored to its original Art Deco style. At this time the museum became known as the Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art (JMOMA).
Renovation was completed to the six-floor building in 2003. In May of that year the museum did a grand re-opening. In 2006 the name of the museum changed again in order to more accurately reflect its collection. It became the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA).
The museum has a permanent collection of approximately 800 pieces as well as traveling exhibits. Educational facilities provide first-rate educational programs and the museum also has a theater/auditorium. The Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville also has a Museum Shop and Café.
Events put on by the museum for its members and the public include an Art Walk the first Wednesday of every month, a Gallery Talk: Seniors Talk and Tea, and an Artist Talk. General admittance is from $5 to $8, with reduced rates for seniors and students. Children under two are free.
