St John' Medical Center is located in Jackson Hole and is a rural-regional hospital. It serves the local population and also the many visitors who come to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks and the nearby ski resorts each year. The Center was built in 1991 and later renovated in 2004, although the original St John's Hospital, built with support from the St John's Episcopal Church, had been open since 1916.
The Center has over a hundred beds and 150 health providers including 81 physicians. It carries out over 2,000 surgeries and delivers over 400 babies each year. There are over 40 medical services available at the Center including cardiology, dentistry, general surgery, and family and general practice. The St John's Health Institute is part of the Center and focuses on nutrition, fitness and exercise support and advice. This is done through a series of workshops and seminars in conjunction with local health practitioners and includes the 'Lite Lunch' series on topics such as breast cancer, diabetes, healthy eating and postpartum depression.
The Center is a community-owned hospital and is supported by the St John's Foundation that aims to raise awareness about the Center's work in the local community and co-ordinate fundraising. Many regular events are held such as the St John's Auxiliary Spring Fling, and the annual charitable golf tournament with competitive and fun classes. Residents can also support the Center by sponsoring a brick paver in the Therapeutic Garden, which has seating areas, and beautiful views of the Teton Mountains.
