Zihuatenejo - A Short Stop from Ixtapa

One of the main attractions of Zihuatanejo is the traditional Mexican culture to which this village has been able to retain. While many areas in Mexico have succumbed to high rises, Zihuatenejo is quite old fashioned and charming. It is really little wonder considering the fact that until just thirty or so years ago the town was really still just a fishing village.

The area was originally a stopping point for privateers and pirates as well as Spanish fleets. The rock barrier which exists on Playa Las Gatas provides an excellent storm shelter even unto this day and throughout history it often proved to be advantageous to ships seeking shelter from storms. Throughout much of the early 20th century, the area remained a sleepy fishing village. It was not until the fine woods were beginning to be exported from the local area that the village obtained notice and gradually tourists began to arrive in Zihuatanejo.

Today, Zihuatanejo is quite popular with tourists and the city has done a wonderful job of combining modern conveniences and luxury with tradition and tranquility. If you are looking for a great place to enjoy the beauty of Mexico while relaxing in peace, this is certainly it.

Perhaps the most popular attraction in Zihuatanejo is the bay where tourists often spend time enjoying the balmy year around weather and beautiful clear waters. Various beaches provide wonderful opportunities for relaxing, soaking up the sun and enjoying the spectacular scenery.

If you enjoy snorkeling, the bay in Zihuatanejo is an excellent place to indulge your passion. The water is clear, the weather is balmy and the sights under the water are gorgeous. A snorkel shop is located in the heart of Zihuatanejo for your convenience.

In the downtown area, known as El Centro, you will find the narrow, paved streets that hint at the charm of an Old World village. Strolling along the streets and window shopping while listening to the music of mariachi bands and troubadours is a popular pastime among many tourists visiting Zihuatanejo.

While you are in Zihuatanejo do make sure hat you do not miss the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande. Here you can learn about both regional and local history.

Just a few of the spectacular beaches worth checking out while in Zihuatanejo include Las Gatas, La Madera, La Ropa, Contramar and El Palmar. City Beach is near the downtown area as well as City Dock, where you can rent a boat for the day.

If you are in the mood to shop, no visit to Zihuatanejo would be complete without a stop by the local artisan's market, Mercado de Artesanias. This open air market features some 200 different booths where local artisans display a variety of arts and crafts for purchase. In addition to the Mercado, you will also find a variety of other shops scattered throughout Zihuatenejo with various merchandise that would make great souvenirs for your friends and family members back home or even a special gift for yourself as a reminder of your trip.
