Ixtapa 101: Tips for Visiting another Country

The new travel requirements can be confusing and as a result many people wonder whether they need a passport if they are traveling to Ixtapa from the United States. The answer to this question lies in how you are planning to travel. If you are planning to travel by air you will not need a passport to fly into Ixtapa but you will need a passport in order to re-enter the United States. When traveling by sea or land you will need to present two different forms of identification in lieu of a passport. Good examples include birth certificates and driver's licenses. Of course, if you wish to plan ahead and obtain a passport, this can help to simplify matters.

If you are flying in to Ixtapa you will arrive at the airport only fifteen minutes from the main Boulevard. As you prepare to depart your plane, make sure that you have your FMT, or 'Tourist Card' as well as your custom declaration forms ready so that they can be signed in order to avoid any delays. You should also be prepared to pass through the Official Customs, where there is a traffic light for inspections. The process is completely random; however, you should be prepared for it.

From the airport to town, you will generally need to take advantage of an airport taxi service as city cabs are not allowed to pick up passengers at the airport. If you have not exchanged your currencies yet, this is not a problem as you can typically pay with Mexican, American or Canadian currencies. If you wish, you can also rent a car at the airport. Once you have arrived at your destination, you will find that you can reach most destinations by walking; however, you can also take a taxi or a local bus if you wish. Be aware that city taxis have no meters; the fares are fixed prices. Bus service is quite inexpensive and you can even take the bus to neighboring Zihuatanejo. Other transportation options for getting around Ixtapa include renting golf carts, motor scooters and bikes.

If you are visiting from the United States you will find that US dollars are widely accepted at many establishments including restaurants, hotels, taxis and shops. Canadian dollars are also accepted in many locations; although not quite as widely as US dollars.

If you wish to exchange your currency, you can do so at local banks as well as at money exchange houses, known as casas de cambio, and hotels. Typically you will obtain better rates from banks than hotels. Be aware that the daily exchange rate can fluctuate.

When planning your trip to Ixtapa it is a good idea to bring along an English/Spanish phrase book as well as comfortable walking shoes and plenty of sunscreen.

While the water system has improved in many areas throughout Mexico it is still a good idea to exercise caution and drink only bottled water while being wary of fresh fruits and vegetables, which may not have been thoroughly cleaned.
