The Walker Theatre was named after an African American female, the first self-made millionaire, named Madame Walker. The center shows the history, culture, art forms and achievements of the African American society. Ms. Walker started the development before her death in 1919, at which time her daughter took over the project and open the doors in 1927. Located in the culture district of Indiana Avenue, the center is the pride of the African American community as a center for business and entertainment.
The Walker Theatre has eight different programs it offers to the community. It offers the Walker Film Series, Humanities, and Academy for Girls, Tours and more. The theatre gives back to the community by educating and teaching. The culture experience that the community receives is what Madame Walker's dream was and her daughter has carried on her legacy.
The inside of the building is decorated with African artworks with African masks as some of the original artifacts that remained intact during the renovations. With available seating for nine hundred people, the theatre is great for video and motion picture screening, lectures and concerts. You can plan just about anything at the Walker Theatre.
If you need a place with elegance, the theatre also has the Conference Center, Boardroom and the Grand Casino Ball Room, which are available for rent inside the building. This is truly a delightful experience for everyone to see. They do have tours available by contacting the Walker Theatre during business hours or by mail.
