U.S S.S. Indianapolis & Historic Central Canal in Indianapolis, IN is an important part of Indianapolis as well as a tourist attraction. It's the site where the Indiana Central Canal was originally scheduled to be built in the 1830s. The Canal was supposed to be engineered and built as a means to transport goods through Indiana. However, the Canal project went bankrupt with the only part of the Canal that was built in Indianapolis. The Canal was never finished, but the area was restored and redeveloped into a cultural center in the city of Indianapolis. It is situated around many major landmarks and attractions in Indiana, Indianapolis in particular. Some of these are White River Gardens, White Rivers State Park Visitors Center, the Historic Pumphouse, the IMAX 3-D Theatre and many other interesting sites.
A very popular part of the Historic Central Canal is the Canal Walk. The Canal Walk was a project started in the 19th century as a means to promote commerce. It expands from the White River State Park all the way to 11th Street. Canal Walk offers many activities such as jogging, biking, inline skating, boating as well as a gorgeous mixture of old and new architecture. Some of the other amenities you will find are bike rentals, pedal boat rentals, fountains, waterfalls and bridges.
