Sunken Garden/Cenotaph Square in Indianapolis, IN is in part of the American Legion Mall. The original American Legion Building was built and later had 5 five-block section added and the Sunken Garden/Cenotaph Square was part of this. The sunken lawn is in front of the main headquarter building of the American Legion. The Sunken Garden/Cenotaph was built in 1931 as a special tribute to the soldiers from Indiana that had died in war.
The main attracting part of this is the cenotaph, a black rectangular granite tomb. The cenotaph rests on top of a red and green granite base, which, in turn, rests on top of a pavement made of red and green squares made of granite. Also a thing of beauty is the bronze wreath with a star that's located on the each of the south, east and west sides of the pavement. Without seeing this memorial in person, one cannot fully appreciate its beauty and dignified appearance. The cenotaph is a memorial for all the dead soldiers from World War I. There is also an inscription and memorial on the north side giving reference to James B. Gresham, who was the first person from Indiana to die in the war. Gresham lived in Evansville, Indiana before his death.
When you're at the Sunken Garden, you are very near to North Street and have a perfect view of the entire Plaza and a lot of the Indianapolis skyline. The Sunken Garden/Cenotaph Square is not only a beautiful landmark for the city, but is also very important to the survivors of the war victims. Many tourists to the city make it a point to come and see this great landmark.
