This six mile stretch of land was almost obliterated by two separate floods and then the city zoo had to close and it has also gone through a few name changes as well. The area in Riverside Park is beautiful with foliage that changes with the season and also serves the needs of the citizens of the city. Many civic groups meet at Riverside Park while athletic leagues use the facilities to compete in various sports.
There are plenty of playgrounds for the kids as well as a swimming area and even a fitness area with gym equipment. Special events, community events and other gatherings are the main focus of the park itself. While not in the hubbub of the city area, it is about five miles away from the downtown area. If you are visiting in the area, you should be aware that there are specific hours of operation with no action going on during a Sunday. Monday through Friday, the hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Saturday, the hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
You can take advantage of the aquatic center, tennis courts, football fields, boat launch, basketball courts, softball and baseball diamonds, horseshoe pits and more. It is the perfect place for a family reunion or even if you are just hanging out during a vacation. There are even rental options should you want to utilize some of their amenities.
