Lockerbie Square in Indianapolis, IN When it comes to seeing the history of a town, the best way to do that is by looking at the architectural history of the town.& By that, one of the best places to look at while visiting Indianapolis, Indiana is the Lockerbie Square.
Not only is the Lockerbie Square an exceptionally old part of Indianapolis, but it is part of the town that holds a lot of history. In fact, Lockerbie Square is the oldest neighborhood in Indianapolis that is still surviving; which was founded in the 1860's by many immigrants. Along with the neighborhood being old, it also has many different types of features; such as having Italianate, Queen Ann and Federal homes. In fact, the oldest part of Lockerbie Square is dated back to 1821.
Because people of all descendants began to build homes in Lockerbie Square, there are many different styles of homes; that are still standing today. In fact, almost all the homes were built before 1910. Some of the homes were brick homes while other homes had huge front porches.
Lockerbie Square today, is located about a half mile from the center of Indianapolis; which has plenty of charm and history. In fact, in the neighborhood you will see that the streets are lined with trees, some smaller homes mixed with a few mansions (which is a quiet residential area) and a tiny population of only 400.
When it comes to some of the homes and buildings in the Lockerbie Square, one of the most famous homes belonged to the poet James Whitcomb Riley. Today, his home is now a historical landmark; which is open to the public to view.
Because Lockerbie Square is a historic district, it can easily be walked through for a viewing. Otherwise, many people will take carriage rides through the neighborhood; for a romantic evening while looking at the beautiful homes.
