Indianapolis City Market in Indianapolis, IN is considered the main public market in Indianapolis and has been for over 120 years. The main design of the area brick architecture was designed by architect D.A. Bohlen. The original site had several small market stalls built with exterior walls made f brick to allow them to be sturdy enough to withstand anything. The interior was constructed of wrought iron columns and trusses to give extra support with a nice appearance. After many years, and a fire in the area, the city market area was renovated and restored in 1970. The original market house, however, is listed on the National Register for historic landmarks.
Today, the Indianapolis City Market is the place to go for most of your needs. It gives the people living in the area a place to go to serve all their needs, whether it's delis, shops, hotels or restaurants. They no longer have the need to travel many miles to fulfill their needs.
A huge and very popular part of the Indianapolis City Market is their Farmer's Market, which brings their goods every May through October. Excitement is rampant throughout the city market during this time when they know the Farmer's Market will soon be there. Over 50 farmers come with their trucks full of fresh-grown produce. In addition to selling excellent produce, the Farmer's Market is also a great meeting place for the people to get together, whether they're other farmers, shopkeepers, chefs or local artists. The main building, the Market House, now has a current state-of-the-art appearance that welcomes all to come to their "outside store".
