Indiana Transportation Museum in Indianapolis, IN is a non-profit organization run by volunteers whose purpose is to help preserve the railroad history in Indiana. Their other mission is to give the public an education on the history of the railroad in a fun way and give them the chance to experience it the way it was years ago. They have 38 miles of railroad track, which was once referred to as Indianapolis & Peru, but recently changed to the Nickel Plate Road.
The Indiana Transportation Museum is located in Forest Park in Noblesville, Indiana, which is only 20 miles from downtown Indianapolis. The Museum has a steady stream of exciting and interesting railroad events scheduled. Their hours are April through October Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The admission to the Indiana Transportation is $3 for adults, $2 for children 3 to 12 and under 3 are free.
They offer three main train rides: the Atlanta Express, the Hamiltonian and the FAIRTRAIN. The Atlanta Express, which is their main line, goes from Hobbs Station to Atlanta, Indiana, an eleven-mile scenic trip. The Hamiltonian, which is their dinner train, takes passengers from Fishers Station to one or two restaurants in either Cicero or Atlanta on every other Friday night. The FAIRTRAIN, which is considered their premier trip, takes passengers to the Indiana State Fair and makes this round trip ten times each day during the fair.
The Indiana Transportation Museum offers programs to the school students in an effort to educate them on the railroad and provide fun at the same time. They provide workbooks, tours of the museum and a train ride. Membership to the museum is encouraged to anyone that would like to spend a lot of time at the museum and take advantage of the discounts to members.
