Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, IN

Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, IN began in the 1800s with the first collection started in 1862 by R. Deloss Brown, with his mineral collections. A few years later a law was passed to provide for collecting and preserving any geological and mineral finds for the natural history of the state of Indiana. In later years, additional items were added to the museum such as artifacts from the Civil War days.

Today the Indiana State Museum is a large attraction with many collections and exhibits. Between the Changing Exhibits Gallery, the NiSource Gallery and the Ford Gallery, you'll see a large variety of art, science and history of Indiana as well as culture from the past and present in Indiana.

One exhibit, "Watching Your Watershed", shows how scientists and researchers monitor and check the quality of the water and how it connects from their own homes to the rest of the community and to other communities. You will also be given lessons on how to help the water in your environment.

The Indiana State Museum has many different gallery programs of interest, whether it's watching a professional performance or talking with someone from the past. The collections of the Gallery are merged with the Core Galleries, with the items being rotated four times a year. The collection consists of items and artifacts from prehistoric times right to the present.

Another point of great interest to many is the Legacy Theatre, put on by the Legacy Theater Troupe. They are some great performers with a lot of talent who portray the characters in the performances. Their goal is to show the audience a look at the history of the African American from Indiana. Their performances are mixed with different images, artifacts, interactive video and text.

These are just a few of the many exhibits and points of interest you will find at the Indiana State Museum. While you're there, you can go to their museum gift shop to get a souvenir.
