Historic Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, IN When it comes to cemeteries in Indianapolis, Indiana, they have several different ones; where very important people have been laid to rest.& In fact, one of them (which is the third largest one) is the Crown Hill Cemetery; which is located at 700 West 38th Street.
The Crown Hill Cemetery is so large that is contains over 25 miles of paved roads, over 185,000 graves, 150 different kinds of plants and tress. In a year, it has roughly over 1,500 burials. It is also considered to be the highest geographical point in Indianapolis (it is also known to be Strawberry Hill).
On June 1, 1864 the Crown Hill Cemetery was dedicated to the large numbers of American Civil War soldiers that had died in the war; who were from Indiana. In fact, the first burial that took place in the cemetery was on June 2, 1864, for Lucy Ann Seaton. Some of the other people that were buried in the cemetery after that were James Whitcomb Riley (famous Hoosier poet), Lyman S. Ayres (founder of L.S. Ayres department stores), Benjamin Harrison (President of the United States), Robert Irsay (owner of the Indianapolis Colts) and John Woodruff (Olympic Medalist) among many other people.
Along with being able to see the natural beauty of the cemetery, such as the trees and plants, you will be able to see many different animals, as well. In fact, Crown Hill Cemetery is also the largest animal refuge in Indianapolis; which also includes over 300 white-tail deer. Many people also consider being able to see "the Crown" one of the prettiest things a person can see; which is the view of downtown Indianapolis.
