Garfield Park in Indianapolis, IN is the oldest park in the city. Established in 1881, this 136 acre park is a testament to the culture and beauty of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana itself. Garfield Park itself offers many amenities to residents and visitors such as an arts center, picnic shelters, horseshoe pits, softball fields, pagoda area, tennis courts, walking trails, a performing arts center, a swimming and aquatics center, gym and weight room, a hill perfect for sledding in the winter, several playgrounds and the Garfield Park Conservatory which also incorporates a Sunken Gardens too.
The family center which houses some of the community offerings has a variety of hours during the week and is closed on Sundays. Some of the larger facilities like the corporate picnic shelters can be rented out for events.
The conservatory is open to the public and you can find a number of offerings such as workshops and guest lecturers on gardening and landscaping, youth classes, horticultural demonstrations and more. The holidays are a wonderful time because you can expect the fall colors to shine through with fall mums and pumpkins and poinsettias for the holiday season.
The Sunken Gardens is filled with beautiful plants, flowers, water fountains and plenty of walking areas to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. It a lovely place to walk year round as the Sunken Gardens is decorated several times a year to reflect the season.
