The memorial is an elegant building with glass panels that have the names of the 3,410 recipients of the award in addition to the location of their heroics and the branch of service there served. There are a total of 27 different glass panels or walls, each of them between seven and ten feet tall. The walls each represent a different conflict going back to the Civil War.
The new Memorial was designed and built in 1999 and unveiled on Memorial Day weekend. It's located in White River State Park on the north side of the Central Canal. The first recorded Fourth of July celebration in Indianapolis was once held in the same location.
The Memorial feature benches, steps and a spot on the grass for visitors. Each day 30 minutes of recorded stories from war can be heard. These stories are played at dusk and involve some Medal of Honor recipients and their act of bravery. These stories have been told by the Medal of Honor recipients that have survived their conflicts.
