Tranquility Park in Houston, TX is a park located in the downtown section of Houston. It's surrounded by many large important buildings including the United States Federal courts buildings and Houston city hall. It got its name, 'Tranquility Park' for the place, Sea of Tranquility where the first man landed on the moon during Apollo 11.
Although Tranquility Park has been opened since 1979, it wasn't fully dedicated for ten years later and then it was on the anniversary of the lunar landing, a historic event. Bronze plaques with words spoken by Neil Armstrong, are on the front entrance of the park. The words are written in 15 different languages. A replica of Neil Armstrong's footprints from the moon is also in the park.
Tranquility Park is a very popular place for festivals, concerts or just hanging out socializing in front of City Hall. Many of the downtown office workers use this park for a picnic or shady lunch spots. It consists of two blocks of water, cylindrical fountains and walkways with many depressions and mounds that are meant to replicate the lunar surface. The park also has a Wortham fountain, which is 32 levels and has stainless steel cylinders towering over attempting to resemble the rocket boosters of Apollo.
Tranquility Park is also the location for the annual Houston International Jazz Festival and Children's Festival. The quiet serene pools and grassy areas make this a perfect lazy afternoon attraction. Other nearby skyscrapers are One Shell Plaza, Allied Bank Plaza, First International Plaza and One Allen Center. This place with its cascading waterfalls is a place of beauty as well as a work of art.
