The town of Houston in Texas has plenty of culture and attractions to offer its visitors. If you are staying in or around Houston then don't miss out on a visit to the museum of fine arts. The Museum is located on Bayou Bend and is open to the public for regular visits and viewing. The museum also puts on special exhibitions and events and the details for this can be had from their booking office or website.
The Museum was the brain child of a group of civic leaders who ran a campaign for art and culture to be encouraged in the public school system. The original Musuem of Fine Arts' Building was first opened in 1924. It was the first art musuem in Texas and the third such museum in the South of the United States. A further two wings were added to the building in 1926 and in 1930 Houston's Garden Club began to maintain the musuem's grounds.
The Museum houses an extensive collection of Native American Art as well as sculptures, Italian Renaissance Art and European prints and drawings. In 1957 the twenty eight roomed Bayou Bend home and fourteen acres of gardens was donated by Miss Ima Hogg and added to the Museum buildings. She also donated her extensive collection of American drawings, paintings and decorative arts.
The Museum of Fine Arts also has its own shop where visitors can buy prints, jewellery and other keepsakes to remind them of their trip to Houston, Texas.
