Historic Dow School in Houston's Old Sixth Ward (MECA) is a big multicultural arts center that has a high quality program that helps to educate and serve thousands of students each year. Some of the many services the students are provided with are education in classical arts, recreation, academic assistance like tutoring, school advocacy and mentoring, SAT preparation and financial aid among many others.
The Historic Dow School aka MECA has helped many students with their future by giving them the help and encouragement to go onto college. Many of their students have received art scholarships from MECA, which have helped them to go to some of the best universities in the country. MECA also offers a general scholarship as well as an art scholarship to local high school seniors. They've also helped some students travel to other faraway countries such as Cuba, Italy, France and Costa Rica as a way to teach them about these countries and their cultures. Most of the students that have started at the Historic Dow School have been very successful in their careers.
The Historic Dow School was the host of the "MECA Day of the Dead Festival". This festival is a huge Latin American community event that helps to celebrate and honor their ancestors as well as all the Latin American traditions. The celebration lasts two days and includes dance, music, theatre, visual arts and some of the best food you can eat. It's a great chance to buy some Latin American arts and crafts.
