Located in Sam Houston Park, the Harris County Heritage Society in Houston is a historical wonder by itself. The beautifully crafted structure is in its own way a work of art. The Heritage Society was formed to prevent the destruction of the Kellum-Noble House, which was built in 1847. The Heritage Society is an outdoor museum within nineteen acres of parkland.
Eight historical buildings have been restored and offer tours and functions for school age children and visitors from everywhere. You will learn about the history of the buildings including the families that once lived in them and the way of life during frontier times. You will see how they lived and how they spent their time reading, cooking and enjoying family times.
You will see exhibits that will have you thinking. Before the computer and the CD players, there was the phonograph and a typewriter. The exhibit sends you back through time to see the radios, phonographs and disc records that we only see in collector's stores. They have different areas for you to enjoy the history that was once considered the true heritage of Houston.
The Heritage Society offers outreach programs, school tours, some adult programs and they have a research library that one can use to learn more about the history of Houston and the historical buildings. Sam Houston Park is as beautiful as a park can be and having the historical structures within its beauty is just one more advantage to your experiences you will share with family and friends.
