The Gann Museum is an historical museum in Saline county Benton, Arkansas. If you are staying in or around the area then time out at the museum would be a day well spent. There are plenty of restaurants and other attractions close to the museum which is located on South Market Street in Benton. Dr. Dewell Gann donated the building to Benton and it became a museum in 1980. Dr Gann had originally asked for the building to be used as a library. The building was originally used as the offices of Dr Gann and it was built and donated by patients who could not afford to pay for their treatment in 1896.
Over the years the Gann Museum collection has grown to include artefacts and historical memorabilia relating to the area. The museum itself is built from a substance known as bauxite and it is thought to be the only building of this type in the world that has been constructed from this material. Bauxite is a soft stone that was dug from the earth of a nearby farm, formed into bricks and left to harden before it was used in the construction of the museum.
The museum houses books and newspapers as well as Native American artefacts. The Museum also holds, and sells reprints of the Benton Courier Centenial Edition of 1937. If you do decide to visit the museum there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy around Benton and plenty of mountain trails for the visitor to explore.
