The Tybee Island Museum is open to the public all year round enabling visitors to come and learn more about the history of the island and view the fascinating artifacts any time of year - even through the winter months.
The Museum is located inside the historic old fort of Battery Garland which was built in 1899 and offers a great view from the roof over the ocean and beach and towards one of Tybee's historic landmarks the Tybee Lighthouse which has been guiding mariners safe entry into the Savannah river for over 270 years!
The Tybee Island Museum has many displays throughout the winding corridors of this old fort which are of interest to anyone wanting to know more about the island with a particular focus on the civil war when Tybee Island would play a significant role as it did through several other conflicts throughout its history including the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. You'll also learn about the origin of the name 'Tybee' which most believe comes from the native American Euchee Indian word for salt which was one of the main natural resources round in the area. Intertwined with this there are also details of the successive Spanish, French and British invasions that laid claim to the region for not only the salt but the many other natural resources in the area.
In all the Tybee Island Museum is well worth a visit if you're planning a vacation to the region — whatever time of year you come.
