Tybee Island Lighthouse near Hilton Head Island, SC is a site you will love seeing. Everything you've ever heard about lighthouses will not prepare you for the view you will get from this lighthouse. Located in Tybee Island, Georgia, it's known in the United States for being one of the most complete light stations. Not only is it the oldest active lighthouse in Georgia, but it is also the tallest at 154 feet tall.
Visitors that come to see the lighthouse are encouraged to climb the winding spiral stairs up to the top for a view they'll never forget. You're going to get so great exercise so make sure you're in good physical condition before you begin, as it's about 175-180 steps to the top! There are little rest stops along the way for you to catch your breath. When you look down, you can see Fort Screven, home of the Tybee Island Museum, almost as though it were close enough to touch. When you're on the top, you'll want to use this opportunity to get some photographs. You'll have the time and the space to freely move around. You'll also get a great view of the island below.
There is a lot of history behind the lighthouse and the lighthouse caretakers. You will get some really interesting literature on the lighthouse to read. When you're on the top, you can even see Hilton Head, South Carolina. The caretakers will point out different scenic sites and famous people's homes from the top of the lighthouse. The reasonable admission is only $6 for adults and $5 for children. It's definitely more than worth the money.
