A barrier island near the Savannah region, the Skidaway Island contains reserves of both fresh and salt water on account of the estuaries and marshes that abound in the region.
Consequently, the island boasts of a curious blend of flora and fauna, some native to the saline water and others to the fresh water habitat. The Skidaway Island State Park, which is located along a part of the intra-coastal waterway, is well known for its scenic locales and diverse activities which it offers visitors to the island. For hiking enthusiasts, the two nature trails that extend through the marshes and meander through the oaks, cabbage palmettos and long leaf pines, make for a picturesque adventure through the park's diverse terrain. Here, you can spot deer, the occasional raccoon and over 300 species of rare migratory birds. Bird watchers can revel in the knowledge that the Colonial Coast Birding Trail in the park is frequented by more than 75 percent of all the species of birds that are found in Georgia. Endangered varieties like the wood stork and the bald eagle have been spotted here on several occasions. The one mile long Sandpiper Nature Trail and the Big Ferry Trail offer plenty of hiking opportunities to the amateur as well as the seasoned expert. The park is also dotted with observation towers to allow you a bird's eye view of the bountiful wildlife it houses.
The Skidaway Island State Park also offers campers 88 tent, trailer and RV campsites for the perfect outdoor getaway. You can also camp at their three pioneer campgrounds for $35 a day. You can even take a dip in the clear waters of the pool which is also equipped with lifeguards to ensure your complete safety.
