National Railroad Museum
The National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin has existed since the mid 1950s. The museum was developed to preserve and exhibit objects associated with the American railroad system. The museum remains in existence due to private contributions. Over time the museum has grown from possessing one train to exhibiting a series of locomotives and equipment. It is not the only railroad museum, but it definitely one of the oldest.
There is a lot to see at the National Railroad Museum. The best way to see a majority of the exhibits is to take a guided tour provided by museum personnel. There are several tours going on at the museum at any given time. There is a 45-minute tour available for adults. There is also a 30-minute train ride during the months of May and September for adults. The museum also offers a theatre presentation called, "Last of the Giants," that lasts about 30 minutes. This presentation features the Union Pacific Big Boy, a large locomotive designed in the 1930s to help transport locomotives. These two tours are also available for children. The theatre presentation for children is an animated production that lasts about 15 minutes.
The National Railroad Museum offers extras with group tours. While the museum tours are guided, they allow plenty of time for individuals to do personal exploration of the area being covered, as well as time for shopping for gifts. The museum also offers gift packages with group tours that are designed to save time with having to visit the gift shop after the tour. The packages are excellent for student tours.
