Old Fort Jackson is 19 miles from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and is located in Savannah, Georgia. It is also known as Fort James Jackson and has been a part of Coastal Georgia's history for almost 200 years.
It is currently a National Historic Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites. The fort was named in honor of Revolutionary War soldier James Jackson. He was also a Georgia govenor.
Old Fort Jackson is the oldest standing brick building in the state of Georgia. It is one of eight Second System fortifications build in the United States. Second System fortifications are a series of forts built before the War of 1812.
When the Old Fort Jackson was in use, it was the headquarters for the Confederate Savannah River defenses during the American Civil War. It is currently owned by the state of Georgia and is operated by the not-for-profit organization, the Coastal Heritage Society.
Hundreds upon hundreds of people visit the fort every year. The fort is popular with student and scout groups. The fort can be rented for after-hour gatherings and community events.
Old Fort Jackson has established a reputation for itself due to it daily cannon salutes. It is the only historic fort in the States that does this daily to passing military vessels. This is typically only done during the summer months.
Old Fort Jackson was built in 1808 and was further developed between 1845 and 1860. Admission for adults is $4.25. Seniors discounts are offered. Children under the age of six are free.
