Oatland Island Education Center near Hilton Head Island, SC is an education center located on a marsh island & based on the environment. It is operated by the Savannah-Chatham Public School System.
The center is open to students from kindergarten through high school and offers over 40 various programs such as endangered species, marine ecology, learning about salt marshes and even an animal program for the young students. The Education Center is open to private as well as public schools, the local and nearby schools. If they're interested in learning, they are welcome to join.
The Oatland Island Education Center building started off as a retirement home in 1927, was the a hospital, then a laboratory and the education center it is today full of all the equipment it needs including a conference center, television studio, offices and environmental classrooms. Nature trails make use of the 60-acre forest, which was once a cotton plantation. Wildlife such as panthers, bobcats, white-tailed deer, pelicans, bald eagles and timber wolves can be seen on the hike.
Evidence of the success of the education center is in that it was kids that built the trails, laboratory, docks and a 500' walkway that goes right to the marsh.
