The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra began life over 25 years ago as an idea by a group of local musicians and music lovers. It is now a flourishing and highly-acclaimed orchestra that has been developed under the direction of Maestra, Mary Woodmansee Green, over the last decade. The orchestra uses the First Presbyterian Church for performances as it doesn't currently have its own venue.
The orchestra has a full season of music performances including Subscription concerts and the Master Series. There are many special events such as the popular 'Symphony Under the Stars' accompanied by a festive picnic, and a free family concert held annually. It holds an annual International Piano Competition that attracts world-class performers and judges, and provides excellent world-class engagements for the prize winners.
In 2007 the orchestra embarked on an ambitious year-long project 'The Dream of America', telling the story of immigration to America in music and words. Concerts from different eras, and composers are included in the program, along with the stories of local people written as part of a project with the Heritage Library.
The orchestra runs a successful outreach and educational program that includes the Adopt-a-School project that supplies musical instruments to students at local schools. The Hilton Head Youth Orchestra also works to bring on young talent and has over 40 students that compete in the annual Concerto Competition. Other events include the Symphony Kids Saturdays program featuring woodwind, percussion, brass and strings projects. The children's work culminates in a free family production.
