Forsyth Park is located in Savannah, Georgia, which is approximately 20 miles from Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. It is Savannah's central park and is located 2.5 miles from the Savannah Historic District.
Up until approximately the mid 1850s, Forsyth Park was called Forsyth. Around the 1850s a portion of the lands were transformed into what is today known as Forsyth Park. The area was used as parade grounds, but now is a popular place to go for a job or a walk.
Forsyth Park has a rich history. When the area was referred to as Forsyth Place, it was a settlement for some of Georgia's earliest British and European settlers. During the American Civil War it was used as a camp for Union soldiers.
The park is 30-acres big and has a one-mile perimeter. Forsyth Park is on the border of Gaston Street and Park Avenue.
Forsyth Park started out as five acres when it was known as Forsyth Place. In 1851 the park was expanded and named after Georgia Governor John Forsyth. William Hodgson donated land for the northern section of the park. He, a private citizen with a love for his city, though his city needed a large public park and went ahead to provide the land to make this happen.
In the park is the Forsyth Park Fountain, which was designed to resemble a French fountain at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. Other monuments in the park include the Marine Corps Monument, the Spanish-American Monument, the Fragrant Garden for the Blind and a monument to the Confederate Soldier.
