Hershey, PA is definitely a tourist area as well as an area of economic growth, which is evident from all the booming businesses that double as great tourist attractions. One such example is the Stone Mountain Wine Cellars in Hershey, PA.
Pennsylvania is known as being a great wine country, with their many wineries and wine cellars, each of them offering tours and sampling and tasting of their wines. Stone Mountain Wine Cellars is part of Jersey Acres Farms, a huge versatile farming operation that includes a roadside produce stand (watermelon, apples, etc), a 200 cow-milking farm as well the winery. They business has been owned by the family since 1911.
Stone Mountain was selling their grapes to other wineries for years until they decided to strike out on their own and make their own wine. In 2004, they began the fermentation process to make their own wine. This decision was a good one as their wines went over very well with the public. Some of their wines will be added to their roadside market sales (known as Jersey Acres Roadside Market). Two of the wines that Stone Mountain currently is producing are Vignoles and Cayuga, both of which are white wines.
Their real pride and joy, however, is their Norton variety, also known as Cynthiana. Most of their acreage is planted with this variety. Unlike the other wines, Norton is a very unique American blue/black variety of wine. When it's made dry, it tastes very similar to Cabernet. In the near future, they will be adding Concord, Niagra and Apple wine to their collections.
