Hershey, Pennsylvania is a city that has many attractions and unique sites, many of them centered on their Hershey chocolates. Millersburg, PA is a town that, in spite of being in the middle of the mountains, has one of the remaining ferryboats running through it.
The exact date the ferry was built seems to be a mystery, but it's been around since the 1800s when David Kramer established it at Millersburg. The ferry exchanged hands many times through the next 100 years. David Kramer left it to his sons, who in turn sold it and it continued to be sold repeatedly through the years. In 1990, a bank of Millersburg purchased it for the last time and gave it to the local Chamber of Commerce in Millersburg, who then started the Millersburg Ferryboat Association. This organization consisted of nine members that would be in charge of the operation of the boats.
The ferry, which is open from May through October, joins Millersburg with Perry County, just south of Liverpool. The capacity of each ferry is 50 passengers and 4 vehicles when going across the Susquehanna. Individuals using the ferry have access to many souvenirs at the Information Center in Millersburg. The town of Millersburg is loaded with other shopping opportunities like a bed & breakfast, heritage museum, art galleries and unique little shops.
There are private charters offered for special occasions such as reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, etc and their rates are very reasonable. The ferry is a means of transportation that many take just once so they can say they've been on the ferry!
