While it is true that the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax has more than 13,000 excellent items in its permanent collection. The gallery also maintains a site in Marshalltown (near Digby) known as the Maud Lewis Memorial, to honour this well-known folk artist who was a native of Nova Scotia.
In addition to the wonderful collection in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the facility offers excellent educational and cultural programs, including Visually Yours programs for schools. Guided visits for students are both interactive gallery tours and speaking/demonstration programs designed to encourage the students' interest in the art world. The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia reaches back 100 years (1908). Considered a premier art facility, the gallery is under the auspices of the Province of Nova Scotia. With a large, energetic Board of Governors and more than 35 staff members, the gallery is well-staffed. But more than 200 volunteers help turn the gallery vision into reality. The gallery also has a great gift/collectible shop, as well as the Cheapside Café.
Located at 1723 Hollis Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in two sandstone structures, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's main entrance is in a courtyard area.
