Halifax Canada Weather Information

Known as "Canada's ocean playground," Halifax owes its weather patterns to the sea. Practically on a peninsula, this Canadian city in Nova Scotia has four distinct seasons all of which are affected and strengthened by the proximity of the sea.

Summer in Halifax

Summers in Halifax are relatively cool, as daytime highs are around 20 to 23 degrees C (68 to 73 degrees  F). Overnight lows are 9 to 13 degrees C (48 to 55 degrees F), so summer travelers will still need to pack a few warm items (long pants, long-sleeved tops) along with short sleeved shirts and shorts for warm summer days. June and July are the driest months of the year, with only 98 mm (3.8 inches) of rain each month. Summer weather is great for taking a visit to Pier 21, a historic site that received one million immigrants over the course of 40 years.

Fall in Halifax

Although fall is a nice time of year in Halifax, evenings and nights can be cool, and this is also the time of the year when the wind shifts from the south to the north, bringing with it more rain, and later, snow. Ironically, September and October are the sunniest months of the year in Halifax, while November typically receives the most precipitation: 141 mm (5.5 inches) of rain. Typical daytime highs are around 7 to 19 degrees C (45 to 66 degrees F) and night time lows are 0 to 9 degrees C (32 to 48 degrees F). An autumn packing list should include short-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, umbrella, long pants, long-sleeved tops, and a jacket or lightweight coat.

Winter in Halifax

As fall fades into winter, the winds continue to blow, and Halifax is blanketed under a cool layer of snow. January is the snowiest month of the year, when 64 cm (25 inches) of snow falls. Typical wintertime snow cover is 10 to 18 cm (4 to 7 inches). Strong storms do occasionally blow into Halifax, with high winds, ice, fog, and snow. Typical highs are around 1 degree C (33 degrees F), and overnight lows are around -8 degrees C (15 degrees F). Winter travelers will need lots of warm clothing and accessories, including sweaters, long pants, thick socks, a heavy coat, and mittens and hats.

Spring in Halifax

The spring thaw brings warmer daytime temperatures, with highs around 3 to 15 degrees C (upper 30s to upper 50s F). Nights continue to be at or below freezing. Mid-spring to early summer is also the foggiest time of year in Halifax, as "sea fog" covers the headlands during the daytime, and slowly rolls inland during evening and night.
