Pay honor to the more than 11,500 women who served during the Vietnam War at the heart-wrenching Vietnam Women's Memorial near the
Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC. The bronze statue shows three uniformed female soldiers surrounding a wounded fellow soldier. As one cradles the wounded man, one looks to the skies while the other kneels nearby. In addition, eight trees surround the statue to memorialize the eight women who were killed during the Vietnam War.
The memorial was established as part of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1993. Although the names of the eight women who lost their lives are featured on the wall, the role that these women played - more than 90 percent in health services - was left out of the adjoining statue until the creation of the Vietnam Women's Memorial.
