The Naval Memorial Foundation was built to honor those who have served, and are currently serving, in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and the Merchant Marine and to eternalize their heritage, values, and traditions. The Naval Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization governed by a board of outstanding public and private leaders.
Built in 1977, it was formed by a committee of respected military and civilian leaders based on the inspiration of a World War II hero and three time Chief of Naval Operations named Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN. Throughout time, the Foundation adopted a public outreach program to honor, preserve and celebrate America's enduring naval heritage. The outdoor memorial features scenes of Navy valor sculpted on bronze panels. The panels circle a map of the world carved into the sidewalk. Beautiful fountains outside the sculpture panels encircle the entire memorial.
Not far away from the memorial is the U.S. Navy Memorial Museum. It features a 35 minute film, At Sea, and a ship store where you can fing military souveners, along with an an electronic log including the names of 500,000 navy veterans and other displays. The museum is open to the public Monday through Saturday, March through October and Tuesday through Saturday, November to February.
