Gettysburg remains to be very historical with many of original Civil War buildings still standing. These buildings are marked with a plaque that states "Civil War Building"; however, in many, you can still see bullet and shell marks on the exterior. The Dobbin House, now a restaurant, used to be a station on the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. You can even see small cubby holes where slaves used to hide on their way to freedom. Many ongoing efforts are made to preserve this little town to the way it looked at the time of the war. Today, Gettysburg, the most famous small town in America, offers a small town atmosphere with an extremely rich history, as well as unique shops, museums, galleries, and restaurants.
Laid out in the 1700's by a man named James Gettys, Gettysburg grew into bustling community of over 2,000 people by 1863. The town featured shops, a bank, and all necessitates one would need in the 1800's, including a renowned carriage business, run out of a locals home. Rumor has it that the rebel army was drawn into Gettysburg in search for shoes, on that fateful day in July of 1863. This lead to the most famous and most important Civil War Battle in American history
