Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC
The unknown soldiers buried at the Tomb of the Unknowns represent the missing and unknown service members from World Wars I & II, The Korean War, and Vietnam. Located in the center of Arlington National Cemetery, the tomb sits atop a hill that overlooks Washington, DC.
The tomb is made of white yule marble from Colorado. The white marble sarcophagus is rectangular and is adorned with columns and neo classical pilasters. It weighs over 124 tons and is over 8 feet tall. On the east side facing Washington DC, the tomb features three greek figures that represent Peace, Victory, and Valor. The sarcophagus sits atop the grave of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. Just west of this tomb lay the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The Tomb of the Unknowns is guarded 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The Memorial Amphitheater is also nearby which hosts state funerals as well as annual Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies.
