The Grant Memorial was built to honor the American Civil War General and President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant. Dedicated in 1922, the memorial features three bronze sculptures mounted on marble bases, surrounding the main pedestal are four shorter pedestals each one supporting a bronze sculpture of a lion. The sculptures, that were hand carved by Henry Shrady, portray Grant sitting on his horse, three artillerymen in a caisson, and seven charging cavalrymen. Located at the bottom of Capitol Hill, the monuments statue faces to the west looking towards the Washington Monument and overlooks the National Mall. Unfortunatly, due to acid rain, the bronze has weathered turning the statues and marble green. Although they have been cleaned the marble continues to carry the green tinge. However, this does not make the memorial any less powerful or any less worth seeing. This is a highly recommended site throughout the city.
