The Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum, opened in 1974, is the first museum in Washington D.C. to be dedicated to modern art and holds over 6,000 works of art from the 19th and 20th centuries.
This is the strongest collection of 19th century French sculpture and American painting. Sculptures by artist such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Aristide Maillol, and many others are displayed in the sculpture garden, located in the center of the building.
This building is a s much as an attraction as what is inside due to the uniqueness of the structure. It is a cylindrical concrete mass on stout legs, around a round courtyard that features amazing pieces of sculpture. The galleries and research facilities are located in the doughnut shaped building which is located on the National Mall, on Independence Avenue at 7th Avenue.
