Explore the rich history of The Ellipse - officially called President's Park South - from it's early colonial days through the Civil War and on to today! While special events are frequently hosted here, the area also features a park for strolling through on lazy days, concessions, a Visitor Pavilion that is open daily and more. Wildlife watching is also popular as squirrels, migratory birds, red-tailed hawks and bald eagles can be seen in the park.
This 52 acre park was first planned in 1791, and was used during the Civil War as the camp sites for Union Troops and corrals for horses, mules and cattle. The park was finally landscaped in 1879, and by 1894 the sidewalks were lighted walkways. Several of Washington's major annual events are featured here each year, so be sure to check to see what is happening at the Ellipse during your getaway to the nation's capital!
