Learn the story of the stray dog who traveled with bags of mail across the country and even the world at the Owney exhibit at the
National Postal Museum. Owney was the dog's name, and he came to be known as the Mascot of the Railway Service. When he died, Owney was preserved and he and his story, along with tags and other artifacts are on display for visitors.
Owney wandered into an Albany Post office in 1888, and was taken in by workers. He began to travel with the mail on trains throughout the state. Soon Owney made a trip around the world in 1895, traveling with mail bags on trains and ships to Asia and across Europe. Owney received tags from the places he traveled and displayed those tags on a doggy vest that he wore. Owney's story is a fun and unique chapter in the history of the Postal Service.
